Non-Olympic Sport
American Football
American Football American football which simply known as football in the United States and sometimes as gridiron outside United States and Canada, and this is a sport played between two teams of eleven. How is it played? The objective of the game is to score points by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone. The ball can be advanced by running with it or throwing it to a teammate. Points can be scored by carrying the ball over the opponent's line, catching a pass thrown over that goal line, kicking the ball through the opponent's goal posts or tackling an opposing ball carrier in his own end zone. Compared to soccer which only involves leg, this game is more roughed as it uses the whole body(shoulder, leg)to tackle the opponent in order to win the ball. Why is it not an Olympic sport? American football is not internationally known by all people as this sport has not caught on with other countries, and such organization are not likely to be seen or formed in the near future. Thus furthering the distance, American football would have a long to journey to enter the games. Therefore, it is kind of difficult to be Olympic sports. Will it be an Olympic sport? As American Football is an Americans based game, it is hard to imagine how it is played in other nations. If American Football is introduced to the Olympic communities, other nations will find it difficult keep up with the game. Thus, it will be a one-sided game as the Americans have played the game for centuries. Furthermore, it has tried to open up games to other nations and this shows that the game is not responding well in other nations. It may be an Olympic sport in the future, but it will be somehow hard. Major competition -NFL regular season "It is played annually between September and December where each team will play with other team in its division twice(once at home and once away)" -NFL Play-offs "This took place every year in January. The teams which are invited to take part in the play-offs are chosen on the basis of their success in the regular season." -Super bowl "This competition is the final of the NFL and a major event in the American sporting calendar which always played on the sunday." Bowling
Bowling Bowling is a sport that test your strength, accuracy, endurance which are necessary so that you can knock down the pins and score points in order to win the game. The sport is well known through out the world but for some reason it is not an Olympic sport. How is it played? A game of ten-pin bowling is divided into ten rounds. In each round each player is given two opportunities to knock down the pins. The player earn points by how many pins he/she knocks down and the winner is determine by the number of points the player is able to earn. Why is it not an Olympic sport? Some people suggest that Bowling is not in the Olympics because the scoring environment is too easily manipulated, because there is limited good players in the countries, and bowling is not really a sport but simply a recreational pastime, as it is not exciting enough. This sport do not have that instant captivating thrill of victory or agony of defeat such as other sports, some say bowling does not require physical fitness like a real sport should. But competitive bowlers often bowl 48 games in three days trying to make 10 pins fall by carrying a 15 or 16 pound ball down a 60 foot slippery lane and that requires physical stamina as well as mental exertion. Olympics should represent the finest athletes that test our skill, strength, speed and endurance in different events. Bowling is the perfect choice for it and thus it should be considered a sport. Will it be an Olympic sport? The United States Bowling Congress has made attempts to get bowling into the Olympics but to no avail. Federation Internationale des Quillers and Bowling's International body has also does its job by pushing this sports outwards. This federation was told by Jacques Rogge, the IOC president, that Olympic sports have been approved for future years. And it is unable to do so as the Olympic organization committees need to removed an approved sports from the Olympic sports before bowling can be added in. After the several days of competition the winner is decided by their ranking which comes from the points that they have gathered throughout the competition. Why is it not an olympic sport? Golf is more expensive compared to other sports, which means more developed countries will participate more than those that are not. United States excel more in this games compared to other countries. The greatest problem with golf being at the Olympics would be; the length of time to complete the tournament but it would be by no means impossible. Will it be an Olympic sport? Lacrosse
Lacrosse Lacrosse is a team sport of Native American origin played using a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled stick called a crosse or lacrosse stick. This sport has four major types: men's field lacrosse, women's lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosse. How is it played? This sport has the same principles as the football and hockey which is ‘score a goal', but this sport added feature of a little net on a stick to jazz things up a bit. The objective of the game is to score by shooting the ball into an opponent's goal, using the lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball to do so. Defensively, the objective is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body contact or positioning. Why is it not an Olympic sport? Lacrosse is not an Olympic Sports because there's not enough participant as it fails to meet the most basic criteria of an Olympic Sport in that a sport must have such as 75 active member countries for men and on 4 continents and 40 countries and on 3 continents. This sport is mostly played only in Canada and America. This sport is rough because there is many body contact which is difficult to prevent ourselves from getting hurt. In addition, this sport is something similar to rugby and thus, at least one need to be eliminated. Lastly, this sport needs to remain its popularity towards other nations before it can be considered as an Olympic Sport. Will it be an olympic sports? At the moment, Lacrosse still has a long way to go in regards to being an Olympic sport, in the other words, it has no universality yet but maybe in the future when it get more popular, it may become an Olympic sports. Tug Of War
Tug Of War Tug of war is an athletic contest between two teams at the opposite ends of a rope. A central line is marked and each team tries to drag the other over the line. The winner is usually decided by adjudging the best two out of three pulls. It is played in all if not most country in the world. How is it played? As mentioned earlier, the center of the rope should exactly come above the center line at the commencement of the actual competition. As soon as the referee blows the whistle, each team can start pulling the rope into their territory. The objective of each team is to pull the rope, along with the opposition team, to their side. As soon as the part of the rope marked with the blue tape (15 ft), crosses over to center line the team which has pulled the rope to their side wins the bout. Why is it not an Olympic sport? It was removed because it is a dangerous sport where people experienced cases of severed fingers and arms, thus this sport is removed due to safety reasons. Other than that, it is being dropped for no apparent reason, and there is no good reason by the International Olympic committee (IOC). Will it be an Olympic Sport? At the current moment there is no information about reinstating Tug Of War as an Olympic sport, and due to the safety issues Tug of War is most likely not going to be in an Olympic sport again. Basque Pelota Basque pelota also known as pelota Basque or pilota are the name for a variety of court sports played with a ball using one's hand, a racket, a wooden bat or a basket, against a wall. The sport is similar to squash, players hit the ball against the end wall of a three-sided court, trying to get the ball out of the opponent's reach. How is it played? Basque Pelota is usually played in a two walled court. Which both players hit the ball back and forth until either one fail to hit the ball. The objective of the game is to earn more points than the opponent, and players earn them when their opponent missed their shot back into the playing area. The winner is decided by the amount of point they have. Why is it not an Olympic sport? Basque-Pelota was only played once, at the 1900 games, it was pull out by the Internation Olympic Committee (IOC) due to lack of participants as there were only two teams to compete and there was only one match being played at that time. The two teams were just France and Spain and this was why it was not an olympic sports anymore. Because IOC are looking for sports whom most of the people in the world knows or familiar with it. This give them the same opportunities to strive for their goal and they are marked based on their hard work. Will It be an Olympic sports? Basque pelota has been an exhibition Olympic sport in Mexico '68 and Barcelona '92 and could become a competition sport in Madrid 2012 unless they are told otherwise. Basque Pelota did make a comeback as a demonstration sport in 1924, 1968 and 1992 but have never been made an Olympic sport again. Cricket
Cricket Cricket is a bat-and-ball team sport (Same as baseball). Its the most popular form played on an oval-shaped cricket field at the centre of which is a rectangular long pitch that is the focus of the game. A game (or match) is contested between two teams of eleven players each. The sport is well known in India, England, Britain and Pakistan. How is it played? A cricket match is played between two teams, each on a field of variable size and shape. One team bats, and will try to score as many runs as possible while the other team tries to limit the runs scored by the batting team. A run is scored by the striking batsman hitting the ball with his bat, running to the opposite end of the pitch and touching the crease without being dismissed. The teams switch between batting and fielding at the end of an innings. Before play commences, the two team captains toss a coin to decide which team shall bat or bowl first. The objective of each team is to score more runs than the other team and to completely dismiss the other team. In limited overs cricket, winning the game is achieved by scoring the most run. Why is it not an Olympic sport? The USA not being renowned for its appreciation of cricket, there was no proposition of a cricket competition, and the idea had fallen out of vogue by the 1908 London Olympics. Perhaps there is not enough nations where they play cricket, and having a test cricket and one day cricket are far too long to be played in the Olympic team sports. Will it be an Olympic sport? There have been recent calls to reintroduce cricket to the Olympic schedule in its new-fangled Twenty20 format. Twenty20's push to be part of the 2020 Olympics have received a major fillip with news that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has voted to have the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved. However, while cricket along with power boating sport climbing, can now bid to join the 2020 games but the ICC currently has no imminent plans to have the format included. Cricket received Olympic "recognition status" in 2007 and faces a stiff battle from other sports, such as golf, karate and baseball, to become part of the programme. The ICC has also been wary of pushing for Twenty20 at the 2020 games. Gliding
Gliding Gliding is a recreational activity and competitive air sport in which pilots fly unpowered aircraft known as gliders or sailplanes using naturally occurring currents of rising air in the atmosphere to remain airborne. How is it played? Its main objective is how long can it soar throught the sky using only the natural air current. Why it is not an Olympic sports? Gliding did not return to the Olympics after the war for two reasons: a shortage of gliders, and the failure to agree on a single model of competition glider. By 1939 the major players in the gliding world were the Russians but not many survived World War II, leaving the pool of potential competitors significantly shallower. There was also uproar in gliding circles that the same model of plane had to be used. The argument goes that the evolution of gliders would plateau. Will it be an Olympic sports? There have been rumors by those in high places in the aviating world to campaign for gliding to get the chance it never got in 1940 but the door has been firmly slammed shut on the grounds that there is not enough public interest. Gliding did not return to the Olympics after the war for two reasons: a shortage of gliders, and the failure to agree on a single model of competition glider. Polo
Polo Polo is a team sport played on horseback in which the objective is to score goals against an opposing team. Players score by driving a small white plastic or wooden ball into the opposing team's goal using a long-handled mallet. How is it played? Field polo requires two teams of 4 players. There are tall collapsible goalposts at each end of the field spread 8 yards apart. The objective of the game is to score the most goals by hitting the ball through the goal. Polo teams change direction after each goal in order to compensate for field and wind conditions. The rules are not too dissimilar to football, except for one glaring four-legged exception, with the aim of the game being to prance around on horseback, before whacking the ball between two sticks. Why it is not an Olympic sport? Polo was on several Olympic Games schedules, but was last an Olympic sport in 1936. This sport is popular in 77 countries which include Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. But the relative number of polo players remains small. In addition, it was suspended from the Olympic sports because there were too many Anglo Saxon sports admitted as part of the games. Polo made five Olympic appearances between 1900 and 1936 but when World War II forced a 12-year Olympic break, the sport was never be seen again. Will it be an Olympic sport? There have been recent murmurs regarding an Olympic return for polo in the not too distant future, but with horses already featuring in two sports (equestrian and modern pentathlon) and a plenty of water polo frolics to enjoy, polo is fighting a losing battle. Thus it's not likely that Polo would be an Olympic sport. Softball
Softball Softball is a team game is similar to baseball; the only different is that it is played in a smaller field and the ball that it use is much more harder than a baseball despite the game's name. It is commonly played whole wide except for countries in the middle east. How is it played? It is played between 2 teams using a bat and a ball in which its objective of the game is to score more runs (points) than the other team by batting (hitting) a ball into play and running around the bases. The team with the most runs after seven innings wins the game. The game play is similar to baseball. Why it is not a Olympic sport? It is not well-known worldwide, and their competition is not at the top level yet. Plus, the United States Specialty Sports Association is the only association that still has a men's major slowpitch program alive. Thus, there is a lack of program to bring about their knowledge of Softball to make this sport stay competitive among the Olympic sports. In addition, International Olympic Committee (IOC) wanted some opportunity to introduce several new sports and in order to do that, they had to remove a couple of sports and starting with the lowest vote 'Softball'. Will it be an Olympic sport? It will be one of the Olympic sport in the future because nowadays most of the countries play softball especially girls, because competitive fastpitch softball for girls are growing increasingly popular. Thus, they tend to addicted with this sport. The reason behind it may be because USA has thousand of teams that compete year-round at tournaments. But more appealing are necessary to convince the IOC and therefore put Softball as part of the Olympic sport.
